Run  New-MailboxSearch without Exchange Enterprise CAL
I have only Exchange Exchange Enterprise Server license, no Exchange Enterprise CAL. I can run New-MailboxSearch. But from MS article, New-MailboxSearch can only run with Enterprise CAL. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff660637.aspx I want to know why I can run New-MailboxSearch without ECAL right now? Do I MUST have Exchange ECAL if I want to run New-MailboxSearch? And if I want to do multi-mailbox search without ECAL, is there any other method I can use except ECP and New-MailboxSearch? For example, MAPI or EWS? I know Search-Mailbox, but I want some other method with better performance.

CALs are between you and Microsoft. There is nothing in Exchange that blocks you from performing functions because you don't have the right CAL. Microsoft trusts you to do the right thing and properly license your users for the number and functions you support. As to what you're allowed to do with the CALs you have, nobody participating in these forums is qualified to quote licensing terms on behalf of Microsoft. Please contact your Microsoft representative or reseller, and/or check out the Microsoft Exchange licensing page: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/contact-us.aspxEd Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi Ed, Thanks for your reply. Can you give me any suggestion about my second question? "If I want to do multi-mailbox search without ECAL, is there any other method I can use except ECP and New-MailboxSearch? For example, MAPI or EWS? I know Search-Mailbox, but I want some other method with better performance. " Thanks for your help again. :)

Hi For Searching an Exchange mailbox by using the EWS Managed API, you could refer to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee693001(v=exchg.80) And for multi search, you could have a look on the blog in the thread: EWS Managed API - logging into multiple mailboxes http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/exchangesvrdevelopment/thread/e23ae767-f376-4b4c-bf55-fc6dae50c7b9 Hope it helps Cheers Zi Feng TechNet Community Support

Hi Zi Feng, Thanks for your reply. Your solution is search mailbox one by one, right? But if I want to search 1000 end user mailboxes, I need to log in 1000 times, right? I think it's similar with cmdlet "search-mailbox". And performance of "search-mailbox" is unacceptable when I try to search 1000 mailbox. Could you give any suggestion about how to search multiple mailbox simultaneously? Thank you so much. :) Have a nice day. Carly
